Casa del Popolo Vegetarian fare, fair trade coffee, music venue that hosts some of the best small international acts, nightly DJ nights, burritos & art vending machine. Need I say more? Favorite.
Café Santropol Delicious sandwiches as big as your head, soup, fresh smoothies, house roasted coffee. They have a lovely outdoor patio in the back.
Café Névé Tiny & cozy with delicious coffee & light fare (sandwiches, salads, soups), including scrumptious baked good (really good muffins). Great warm-up/take a break spot. 

Mile End
Café Ellefsen Swedish cafe with light fare. Lovely simple interior design.
Le Cagibi Fresh coffee, housemade pastries & lunch items. Intimate space to hear good local music. Great place to hang out. A favorite.
Le Depanneur Café Casual & arty setting with comfortably worn decor. Coffee & light fare, local jazz & acoustic acts.
Dinette Triple Crown Delicious Southern comfort food in a nouveau-diner atmosphere. Fried chicken, pulled pork, mac 'n cheese, corn bread, mashed potatoes.
Le Falco Delish coffee & Japanese cuisine served up in a gorgeous industrial setting

Old Montreal

Olive & Gourmando Amazing sandwiches & baked goods, & delicious fresh coffee in an old-world-meets-modern market café atmosphere. Perfect breakfast or lunch stop.


Many restaurants in the Plateau are bring your own wine/apportez votre vin. Stop in one of the many SAC stores along St. Denis or St. Laurent to buy a bottle (or two!) before you go.

Arepera du Plateau Casual & delicious Venezuelan. The avacado sauce is to die for.
Omnivore Light Mediterranean fare made with fresh & local ingredients. Kaftas, salads, soups. Consistently incredibly delicious.
Chuch Chu Chai's (see below) more casual dine-in bistro with a tapas-like approach to the menu. Last time we went they were offering the regular Chu Chai menu, as well.
Aux Vivres Vegan & vegetarian food, really fresh & really well done. Nice outdoor patio in the back, fabulous smoothies & fresh juices.
Salla Rosa Tapas, mussels, Spanish wine & beer. Casa Del Popolo's big sister, they host great shows & DJs in the hall upstairs.
Schwartz's A Montreal institution. Hebrew deli that makes the region's traditional smoked meat for 80+ years on the historical Main. There's always a line out the door.

Le Moineau/Sparrow We love this place for brunch, but the dinner menu looks equally enticing. Great decor & service, delicious, hearty fare.
Omma Homestyle Korean cuisine in a sweet & casual setting. Yum!
La Croissanterie Figaro French Bistro-style cafe in art-deco surroundings. Outdoor cafe seating.

Chu Chai Vegetarian Thai food, many classic & traditional dishes made with creative soy-based "meat alternatives". Sounds crazy & dicey, but it's amazingly good. We've brought many vegetarians & non-vegetarians here, & they've all loved it & go back.
Pintxo Spanish/Basque tapas. One of our favorites.
Laloux The real deal for French/Quebecois cuisine. Consistent & elegant.
La Prunelle French/Quebecois cuisine often using local ingredients, in a lovely, warm atmosphere. Another of our favorites.
Le P'Tit Plateau Tiny, warm & wonderful little resto. French style cuisine, very well done, often with local ingredients. A favorite.
Au Pied de Cochon Local meats & foie gras are the specialties. Artisanal poutine & Quebecois fare in a backwoods-chic atmosphere.

Le Club Chasse et Peche Holy moley. Fantastic, artistically approached offerings served in an elegant, chic atmosphere.

St. Viateur BagelsFairmount Bagels The real deal in the Mile End. We always bring home a big bag of the sesame, & dole them out like they were gold. You can't go wrong with either.
Le Fromentier great bread!
Cocoa Locale cakes, cupcakes & pastries to die for.
Premiére Moisson classic, artful boulangerie/patisserie fare. As delicious as they look. 


Marché AtwaterJean Talon fresh fruits & vegetables, fish, cheese, prepared foods from cultures around the world, flowers, cooking supplies, everything food-related. Incredible.

Cafe Laval They roast their own beans & pull a kick-ass espresso. Simple, minimal interior, & lovely owners.
Café Pi Fair trade & organic coffee, & lots of chess.
Le Couteau Artisanal coffee & goodies. Nouveau-shaker-esque interior.
Aux Deux Marie & Brulerie St. Denis Local coffee roasters that sell beans & serve drip coffee & solid espresso drinks, both with locations on St. Denis. A café au lait served in a traditional bowl is recommended!

Café Olimpico Best for-real Italian espresso in town; outdoor seating.
Cafe Le Falco Tucked away on a back street, delicious Siphon coffee in a beautiful industrial-arts setting

Laika beer, wine, small bites. Nightly DJs. A favorite.
Bíly Kün a little more casually schmance, & full of regulars & beautiful people. White Horse ales amongst other beers, wine, port, spirits. Jazz, DJs & classical performers (Leider songs!) most evenings.


Chocolats de Chloe A neatly stocked little gem with a beautiful array of chocolate truffles, tablets, turtles, chocolate covered sponge toffee, drinking chocolate, sauces, praline-filled molded chocolate sardines, cocoa & pastilles, in a delightfully whimsical package.
Chocolats Genevieve Grandbois Elegantly designed single- & dual-note chocolates, as well as fantastic terroir chocolates from top Criollo-growing regions in South America & Africa. Packaged in a chic reusable tin. Perfect gift.
Chocobel Excellent ganaches with adventurous combinations which feature many local & seasonal fruits & offerings, all expertly done. Well worth the trek.
Suite 88 Gorgeous chocolates in a luxurious, modern atmosphere.


Walking a loop in the Plateau from the corner of Rue St. Denis & Square St. Louis, & continuing northwest to Mt. Royal Ouest & back down Boulevard St. Laurent, is a great way to take in the myriad boutiques, shops & small restaurants & cafés on these lively & lovely streets. Rue Rachel & Avenue Duluth Est are charming streets to cut in & wend around along the way.
